In Burundi, wood is the main source of domestic energy and accounts for 96.6% of total energy use. 77% of all charcoal supplies are used by city dwellers. The results of a survey conducted along major roads show that the urban populations of Bujumbura and Gitega consume a total of 70,100 tons of charcoal (56,548 and 13,552 tons respectively). The annual charcoal consumption by the country’s entire urban population was estimated in our study at 104 718 tons. Charcoal consumption in Gitega and Bujumbura alone destroys 3,505-4,673 ha of forest cover per year, with the figure for Burundi’s total urban population reaching 5,236 to 6,980 ha. The market for quality-verified improved cookstoves is very nascent, reaching less than 2% of the population with almost all rural households using traditional three-stone stoves. At this rate, Burundi’s entire forest cover, currently estimated at 171,625 ha, will disappear in about 25 to 33 years. (BOIS ET FORÊTS DES TROPIQUES, 2016, N° 328 (2)) At KAGE Ltd, we fight against deforestation by bringing credible alternatives to wood energy as we contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development Goal 15, in its target 2 “By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally”, target 5 “ Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species”
